Advocates for Homeless & Those in Need Makes Presentation to Rotary Club of Bensalem

AHTN 2Penny Martin, founder of Advocates for Homeless & Those in Need, made a presentation about her organization to the Rotary Club of Bensalem at their September 9th luncheon meeting held at Michael’s Restaurant on Street Road.

Advocates for Homeless & Those in Need (AHTN) is a Bucks County based, interfaith nonprofit organization that provides temporary help to those in need by offering emergency shelter, food, clothing, and other related services. Penny Martin started the organization in 2009, when she realized that many needy Bucks County residents lacked the transportation necessary to get to shelters, free meals, etc.

With the purchase of a small school bus, lovingly named Delilah, and some volunteer drivers, the issue of transportation had been solved. But that didn’t stop Martin from continuing to find ways to help the needy. Shortly after purchasing Delilah, Martin realized that Bucks County had no code blue shelter plan in place. A code blue is when temperatures drop below 26 degrees, which is deemed too dangerous for anyone to be living outdoors, such as the homeless. Thanks to Martin and AHTN, Bucks County now has a code blue plan and the homeless have transportation to get to various local shelters.

AHTN’s “Wheels to Meals” program drives those in need to shared meals generously hosted and provided by local churches and

other community organizations. AHTN has also been integral in growing the number of organizations that host the meals.

Another of AHTN’s wonderful services is the “Rejuvenation Station” hosted by the Fallsington Friends Meeting. Here, those in need can take a shower, get a haircut, shave, and be given freshly laundered clothes. Once again, Delilah provides transportation to the Fallsington location.

AHTN provides wonderful services to the needy in our community, but they need our help to continue to do so. Volunteers are always welcome and monetary and supplies donations are in constant need. To find out how you or your organization can help, please visit
