Bensalem is home to many great non-profit organizations. One such organization is the St. Francis – St. Joseph Home for Children. Founded in 1888, St. Francis – St. Joseph is part of the networks of Catholic Social Services of the Philadelphia Archdiocese and has a long, historical tradition of caring for young boys in need.
Upon it’s inception in 1888, St. Francis – St. Joseph functioned as two separate entities. St. Francis began as an industrial school for boys located in Eddington funded as a private charity by Elizabeth Drexel Smith. St. Joseph, also founded in 1888, was opened by the Archdiocese as an orphanage for boys and was located in North Philadelphia. Over 25 years ago, both institutions left their original locations and merged into a single group home program. In 1998, the two entities unified under a single administration and integrated their programs and services. In 2002, the organization changed it’s name to St. Francis – St. Joseph Home for Children.
Today, St. Francis – St. Joseph functions as a residential treatment agency offering placement and support services for young males ages 12-21. They are currently serving over 150 residents in five campus living units, ten community based group homes and an independent living program. The campus is also home to the St. Katharine Drexel School so that residents whose needs are not being met in community schools can have access to a full curriculum of regular or special education services. In addition, residents also have the opportunity to take advantage of therapeutic and case management services offered by the Agency’s Social Service Department. Each resident is assigned their own clinical social worker and case manager who work to individualize services for each client.
As stated above, St. Francis – St. Joseph Home for Children is a non-profit organization that is run by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Their programs for youth and their families, who have experienced high-risk circumstances or deprivation, are augmented and enhanced by charitable giving. St. Francis – St. Joseph Home for Children gives a lot to our community and in return, we should try to assist them as best we can.
