Not only are today’s models raking in the big bucks for strutting their stuff down the runway, but they’re also making a pretty penny from various endorsement deals and other business dealings. They’re work on and off the runway has produced some of the highest salaries the modeling industry has ever seen. These beautiful bombshells are no longer simply getting paid to be pretty. Behind their gorgeous exteriors lies a keen business sense and knowledge of the modeling industry that allows them to not only market themselves, but to take advantage of other behind the scenes business opportunities such as owning shares of a shoe company or starting their own fashion line. The following ten models not only have beauty, but also the brains that put them on the list of the top ten highest paid models of 2013.
10. Lara Stone- $3.2 million
In 2010, this Dutch-born beauty signed an exclusive deal with Calvin Klein which placed her in their ads for jeans, fragrances, jewelry and other Calvin Klein collections all at the same time.
A native of South Africa, Swanepoel was discovered at a flea market at the age of 15. Her first big contract was with Victoria’s Secret for a spot with the lingerie giant as one of their Angels. Add in her additional contracts with Versace, Max Factor and Juicy Couture an she hits number nine on this list.
Smalls’ career was kick started back in 2010 when she was selected to walk the runway for Givenchy. Since her debut in the modeling world, she has also posed for Calvin Klein Jeans, Chanel and Lacoste. She has also been on the cover of GQ, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. With her Puerto Rican roots, she also became the first Latina ambassador for Estee Lauder.
Since starting her career at the age of 17, Murphy has worked with fashion icons Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Karl Lagerfeld and the late Helmut Newton, among others. She has also represented Estee Lauder and continues to do advertising campaigns for them in addition to having signed contracts with Ann Taylor Loft, Coach and Carlo Pazolini. She was also this year’s host of Project Runway: All Stars.
At 26 years old, Rhoda has already spent seven years with Estee Lauder. She also has endorsement deals with Nike and Hugo boss in addition to her runway contracts with Ralph Lauren and Victoria’s Secret.
Liu Wen is China’s first major supermodel as well as the first Chinese model to walk the runway in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. She also has endorsement deals with H&M, Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss and Estee Lauder.
At 39 years old, Moss has defied the typical shelf life of most models. She has a multi-year contract with Vogue Eyewear as well as deals with Rimmel cosmetics and designers Versace and Liu-Jo.
Lima, a Victoria’s Secret Angel since 2000, is the company’s longest-running Angel in the brands history. Although most of her earnings come from her huge Victoria’s Secret contract, she also has endorsement deals with Miu Miu, Mavi Jeans, Donna Karan and Metrocity.
Hailing from Australia, Kerr became a Victoria’s Secret Angel in 2007. In 2009, she started her own cosmetics line called Kora Organics. She also has new contracts with Mango, David Jones, Lipton and Quantas. Kerr is becoming very successful in Asia as well with endorsement deals with EMODA, Clear and Samantha Thavasa.
For the seventh year in a row, Gisele Bündchen has finished the year as the highest-paid model in the world. She does this in impressive fashion (no pun intended) as she earns seven times as much money as number two finisher Miranda Kerr. She is the face of H&M, Chanel and David Yurman. She also has major income coming in the form of merchandising partnerships including a lingerie line, accessory collections and her Ipanema flip-flops brand. Bündchen has also started her own eco-friendly Sejaa Pure Skin Care company. At 32 years old, this Brazilian beauty hardly shows signs of slowing down, although her attention may shift from modeling to other business ventures in the future.
